Fair Trades: Fast-track job training for artists and creatives

Does art get made while waiting tables?

The hospitality and service industries have traditionally monopolized the “day job” selections of NYC’s artists and creatives. An established caste of professional hybrids – painter/waiter, sculptor/bartender, photographer/busboy - hustles to make money to support themselves and their art/practice. This might be you.

Here’s an alternative.

This summer, register for NYFabricates’ Fair Trades programs in set design and art handling.

Unlike the service industries, these opportunities put you in daily touch with the people, positions, companies and organizations that represent NYC’s artistic and creative sectors. Through Fair Trades, you’ll pick up a new trade with skill, technique and confidence.

The two-session trainings will:

1. Train artists and creatives in workshop-based fabrication

2. Review professional “dos” and “don’ts” that will make you a more competitive and valuable free agent

2. Match trainees to employers at NYC-based set and art handling shops

Our instructors have 5+ years of experience in the set design and art handling fields and are connected deeply to their respective fields. Our goal is to get everyone an interview and place as many people as we can in part-time and full-time positions.
