NYDesigns X SVA: Conversaciones
¿Hablas Diseño? At the School of Visual Arts (SVA) and NYDesigns present Conversaciones, a series of public lectures featuring some of New York’s most accomplished Latino creative professionals. Each panel targeted a topic relevant to the challenges and needs of Latino creative professionals, including those in media, advertising, architecture, communications design, product design and others, and the communities they serve.
The New York metropolitan area’s Latino population numbered 50 million in the 2010 census, up from 35 million in the 2000 census. Mirroring this trend is the growing number of Latino-owned businesses and the strengthening consumer clout of the Spanish-speaking community. Despite these significant gains, challenges and barriers to growth remain for individuals and communities alike, obstructing the advantages of full economic potential at the individual level and limiting expansion and productivity at the macroeconomic level. In the design and creative industries, there exists a need for creative talent to service a bilingual market demanding media and products that address the cultural needs of the Latino community.
In the Conversaciones series, each panel targeted a topic relevant to the challenges and needs of Latino creative professionals, including those in media, advertising, architecture, communications design, product design and others, and the communities they serve. Between 2011 and 2013, we organized 5 talks:
- Design Goes Social: Negotiating The Intersections Of Art, Politics And Community
- Apps, Activism And The Latino Community
- Looking to the Future: The Latino Market as American Market
- Latinos in Social Media
- Strategizing Visibility for Latino Creative Professionals
